This suiboku painting comes with the original sign, seals and original paulownia box.
It was painted in 1917.
We asked our mounting shop to remount.
Fumikoshi Reikai (1874-1947) was a famous monk of the Soto sect especially Suiboku Daruma Painting.
He was born in Kanahama, Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture in 1874. His real name was Mototaka. He was the 21st chief priest of Geppozan Ryoun-ji Temple in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture in 1894.
Ryoun-ji Temple was opened around 450years ago.
He was known for his spiritual training in Daruma and was a talented painter from a young age. He studied under Mokudo Kikuchi and Monjiro Kikuchi.
The temple was burnt down in 1926, when he was there.
He traveled throughout the country as a missionary of the Soto sect’s head temple during the war. At the same time, he tried to help to reconstruct the temple’s main hall.
He left Daruma and orchid paintings when he visited Hachinohe City, Iwate Prefecture.
He passed away at the age of 73 in August 1947 without having fulfilled his ambition.

Daruma (Bodhidharma) is very famous monk. And also known he sat facing a wall in mediation. But his story is not only this. Bodhidharma crossing the river standing on a reed in the night like this scroll. That’s why Soto sect’s monks love to paint Daruma.
