Vintage Hagi Matcha Tea Bowl by Morishige Eitetsu (Wari Kodai) , Unused with Original Box and Cloth
MB-012401
This is a beautiful vintage Hagi ware matcha tea bowl created by the renowned Japanese potter Morishige Eitetsu.
Hagi-yaki is one of the most celebrated traditional pottery styles in Japan, originating from Hagi and Nagato in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is especially appreciated in the tea ceremony world for its soft texture, warm appearance, and the way it develops character over time.
This particular tea bowl features a distinctive “Wari Kodai” (split foot), a bold and expressive base design that adds both visual interest and stability. The bowl has a gently rounded form with a soft, natural glaze in tones of greyish pink and subtle earthy hues, characteristic of Hagi ware.
This is not a typical Hagi tea bowl — it is a strong and expressive Oni Hagi piece with a well-fired body and sculptural Wari Kodai, features rarely seen on the market.
This is a one-of-a-kind studio work, not factory-produced pottery.
Morishige Eitetsu (1930–2016) was a highly respected master potter who made significant contributions to the development of Hagi ware. His works are widely admired in Japan, and his name is well known among collectors and tea practitioners.
This piece was acquired from a relative who is a dedicated collector of Hagi ware. It has been carefully preserved and remains unused, accompanied by its original paulownia wood box, original cloth, and guide paper.
The date written on the wooden box indicates January 16, 1978.
This is a rare and collectible item, ideal for both tea ceremony use and as a display piece.
Due to its quality, condition, and rarity, we have priced this piece accordingly. Comparable works of this level are not commonly available.
