Vintage Kyo-yaki Matcha Tea Bowl, Chawan, 2nd Heian Kyosen, Japanese Matcha Tea Bowl, Kyo-yaki, Kiyomizu-yaki, Unused, Displayed,
MB-051901

This tea bowl is Kyo-yaki, Kiyomizu yaki and made by 2nd Baba Kyosen.
It comes from original paulownia box and original cloth in excellent vintage condition consistent with age (Unused / Displayed).

Heian Kyosen (Baba Kyosen) is a renowned artist specializing in Kyoto pottery and Kiyomizu pottery. The second generation Heian Kyosen succeeded the first generation Heian Kyosen and mastered various techniques to create high-quality Japanese tableware, tea utensils, and decorative items. After graduating from Kyoto City Senior High School of Arts in 1952, he studied under their father.
He inherited the title of the second generation Heian Kyosen in 1976.
In 1993, he exhibited at the “Contemporary Kyoto Pottery and Kiyomizu Pottery Exhibition in Paris” hosted by the Japanese Embassy in Paris. He moved Kyosen kiln relocated from Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto to Yamashina-ku, Kyoto in 2004.
The title of the third generation Heian Kyosen was inherited in 2005.

This chawan has a more subdued and grounded aesthetic compared to the artist’s more decorative works. It has a noticeable weight and presence when held, offering a sense of stability and depth that is particularly appreciated by those who prefer a more substantial tea bowl.

Its quiet, understated character makes it especially appealing to collectors who value simplicity, balance, and a more contemplative tea experience. The design is inspired by the pine motifs of Ogata Kenzan.

Unlike lighter, more decorative tea bowls, this piece offers a deeper tactile experience, making it ideal for those who appreciate weight, balance, and quiet sophistication.

The third generation Heian Kyosen inherited the title in 2005. As a result, works by the second generation have become less commonly available in recent years.
