Vintage Ko-Seto Chaire, Tea Caddy, Yamaguchi Jotetsu II, Rikyu Tsurukubi Chaire, Seto ware,
IMC-112802

This piece is finished with a traditional “Ko-Seto glaze”. This glaze is primarily composed of feldspar and wood ash, with naturally occurring iron oxide. During firing, it develops deep shades of black, reddish brown, and amber.

Yamaguchi Jotetsu II (1920–1999) was the son of Yamaguchi Jotetsu I. He was born in 1920 into a pottery family in Akazu, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, an area renowned for its long tradition of ceramic production. He studied pottery under his father and became a highly respected potter active from the Showa through the Heisei period.

He produced a wide range of tea ceramics using traditional techniques and glazes, including Oribe, Shino, Ko-Seto, and Seto-Karatsu. He is particularly well known for his Matcha tea bowls, hiire containers, mizusashi fresh-water jars and chaire tea caddies.

He passed away in 1999, and the family kiln is now carried on by the third generation.
