Sake Cup Washer Haisen Bowl

Haisen is a vessel used to rinse a sake cup at a drinking party. In the past, there was a custom in Japan that we were sharing sake with one cup. Haisen was used during this time.
Many of them have impressive designs and a strong presence. Initially, large bowls or other vessels were used as haisen, but gradually, specialized haisen made of tin, porcelain, lacquer, and other materials evolved. Elegant haisen made of lacquer with maki-e designs even had dedicated stands. Nowadays, individual sake cups are used, and the need for haisen has disappeared. However, many collectors still collect haisen as beautiful interior decorations.
