KC-051101
Hagi-yaki is one of famous Japanese pottery based in Hagi and Nagato in Yamaguchi, Japan.
This guinomi is a posthumous work of the celebrated Hagi-yaki master Morishige Eitetsu (1930–2016), completed shortly before his passing. It was officially authenticated and signed by his son, Morishige Tohru who inherited his father’s kiln and artistic legacy.
Originally created for the planned joint exhibition of father Morishige Eitetsu and son Morishige Tohru in September 2017, this piece was among the works Eitetsu had already finished preparing, complete with its dedicated tomobako (original paulownia box), tomonuno (original cloth wrappers stamped with his seal), and shiori (original leaflet). Following his father’s death, Tohru added his authentication, his signation and his seal to the original wooden box, ensuring that Eitetsu’s final works could be presented as intended at the 2017 Hagi-yaki “Tōdō” Exhibition.
The exhibition marked the last chapter of Eitetsu’s artistic journey and works sold there are regarded as significant collector’s items. This guinomi, acquired at that event, is a particularly fine example.
Hand-molded from coarse clay, this guinomi embodies the bold, vigorous spirit of Eitetsu’s late style. Its powerful form is enhanced by a thick rim, featuring a natural jiwari (fissure in the clay surface) and ishihaze (stone burst), a hallmark of Oni-Hagi ware.
The cup exudes both strength and refinement, capturing the essence of Eitetsu’s pursuit of artistic mastery.
As one of the last works released at the landmark “Tōdō” Exhibition, it carries not only aesthetic appeal but also exceptional provenance, making it a distinguished addition to any serious Hagi-yaki collection.
It is unused in excellent vintage condition consistent with age with original paulownia box, original cloth and original leaflet.
We got it from our relative. She told us unused, because her father just collected sake cups as his collection.
We did not see any sign of using.
