“KOGO” incense care (container) is a vessel with a cover, for holding incense. Used at “TEMAE” ceremony and placed as an ornament on the floor of “TOKONOMA” in the “CHASHITSU”. Unlike the “KORO” it is not used for burning incense but is exclusively for smelling the fragrance from it. There are many various of “KOGO”. During the Edo period there were so many numerous varieties the “KOGO” “BANZUKE” (ranking lists) were compiled. – Quote from A Dictionary of Japanese Art Terms
We found this “KOGO” in our warehouse belong to my mother.
It is made by one of the famous Hakata doll’s artist, 2nd Nishito Tetsusaburo.
He is also famous for Kogo.
He used natural pigments for vibrant colors and expressed his artworks with beautiful shapes.
Nishito Tetsusaburo (1948-2023)
Biography:
•1948 Born in Fukuoka City as the eldest son of the first Nishito Tetsusaburo, a Hakata doll maker. His real name is Nishito Tetsutei.
•1970 Became a holder of excellent skills as a modern master.
•1972 Selected for the Fukuoka City Art Exhibition. Received numerous awards in subsequent exhibitions.
•1973 Received the Fukuoka City Art Exhibition Education Committee Award.
•1979 Received the Excellence Award at the New Product Development Exhibition.
•1980 Created the offering “Spring” for the Takamatsu-no-miya family.
•1983 Received the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award at the New Hakata Doll Exhibition.
•1989 Received the Excellence Award at the Asia-Pacific Expo Memorial Competition. Created 700 dolls depicting the history and seasonal festivals of Hakata for the same expo.
•1991 Recognized as a traditional craftsman.
•1996 Created the offering “Namazu” incense holder for the Akishino-no-miya family. Won second place in the National Traditional Crafts Festival Hina Doll Contest with “Kotobuki Tatebina”. Held solo exhibition at Kokura Sogo Department Store. Held solo exhibition at Daimaru Umeda Department Store Art Gallary. Held solo exhibition at Daimaru Uneda Department Store every year.
•1998 Held solo exhibitions at Kumamoto Traditional Crafts Museum and Fukuoka NHK Gallery.
•2000 Received the Gold Award at the New Product Development Exhibition. Held solo exhibitions at various locations including Kagoshima Prefecture Ibusuki City Hotel Syusuien.
•2001 Held solo exhibitions at various locations including Oita Prefecture Kitsuki City “Sumaya-an” and Shizuoka Prefecture Hamamatsu City Entetsu Department Store.
•2002 Held solo exhibitions at various locations including Oita Prefecture Oita City Hoashi Honke and Saga Koga Residence.
•2003 Held solo exhibitions at various locations including Oita Prefecture Taketa City “Soseikan” and Kumamoto Prefecture Yatsushiro City Yoshino Residence. Received The Performance Award of The Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries
•2004 Held solo exhibitions at Tokyo Takashimaya Department Store Tamagawa Store.
•2007 Received the Interior Award and Idea Award at the First Hakata Doll Interior Exhibition.
•2010 Received the Asahi Newspaper Award at the Fukuoka Prefecture Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Held solo exhibitions at Daimaru Shinsaibashi Department Store.
•2011 Donated the statue of Prince Kaneyoshi to Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Received the Fukuoka City Skills Merit Award.
•2013 Received the Fukuoka Prefecture Governor’s Award for Excellent Skills.
•2014 Member of the Fukuoka City Art Federation and Fukuoka Cultural Federation.
It is unused with original cloth and original paulownia box. It is a beautiful shape and colors.
This is not a mass production model.
