Tanba ware is a type of pottery ware produced in the Tanba district in Takin County in Hyogo prefecture. Tanba kilns are thought to have produced Yakishime ware by oxidization firing, in the early Kamakura period.
Tanba kilns began producing glazed ware during the Edo period.
– Quote from A Dictionary of Japanese Art Terms
The first-generation Shinsui (real name: Ichino Nobuo) was born in 1932 in Konda Town, Hyogo Prefecture, as the second son of the ceramic artist Ichino Tansen.
He studied pottery under his father, Tansen, and then became independent.
The first-generation Shinsui began his pottery career at Onaka Kiln before establishing his own kiln (Shinsui Kiln) in 1968.
Ichino Katsuaki was born in 1957 as the eldest son of the first-generation Shinsui. He began making pottery in 1980 and succeeded to the name of the second-generation Shinsui in 2002.
Both the first and second-generation Shinsui are well known as ceramic artists who produce tea ceramics of very high quality.
Older works bearing both kiln names (“Onala Kiln” and “Shinsui Kiln”) indicate transitional pieces, showing the lineage and continuity of the ceramic tradition between the historic communal kiln and the independent family kiln.
