The lacquer Natsume tea caddy is made by Nakatani Shusai.
He is one of the leading artists representing Ishikawa Prefecture’s lacquerware (Wajima-nuri, Yamanaka-nuri, Kanazawa-nuri) and specializes in the creation of tea utensils. Many of his works feature exquisite maki-e (gold and silver lacquer) designs, showcasing their high level of originality.
1931: Born in Ishikawa Prefecture.
1951: Studied under his father.
1955: Learned the technique of Ikkannuri, which involves layering paper on wood and applying lacquer, in Kyoto. Subsequently, he began creating tea utensils in earnest.
1984: His works were included in the collection of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts.
It is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age with original paulownia box. (Unused)
We do not see any sign of using.
It is traditional art and craft. Please do not look for perfect finishing like machine made.
