Mino ware is a general term for ceramics fired in the southern region of Gifu Prefecture, once known as Mino Province. In a narrower sense, it refers to ceramic styles that began around the 15th century in the late Muromachi period, including Setoguro, Ki-Seto, Shino, and Oribe ware.
Yamada Masakazu (b. 1951)
Yamada Masakazu is a Mino ware ceramic artist born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. While carrying on the spirit of Momoyama-period ancient ceramics, he seeks to go beyond their traditional styles, exploring the beauty created by clay and flame in order to make pottery that people will use and cherish in everyday life.
In his creative practice, Yamada believes that the most important thing is to understand the distinctive qualities of the glazes he uses and to express them in his own unique way. His works center on Shino, Oribe, and Ki-Seto ware, while also encompassing a wide range of tea ceramics and tableware.

* 1996: Received the Encouragement Award at the Mino Ceramic Art Exhibition
Full member of the Japan Kōgei Association; board member of the Tokai Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association; director of the Mino Ceramic Art Association.
His works are made using Godomaki clay and fired in a gas kiln.
