Raku ware is a type of pottery ware produced in Kyoto.
Raku ware refers to ceramics, mostly tea bowls, produced by the Raku family from the first generation Chojiro. Raku ware is formed by hand, and fired in temperatures from 700℃ to 1,000℃.
There are two type of Raku ware: the Aka-raku (Red Raku ware), which is covered with transparent glaze over a clay surface containing iron oxide, and Kuro-raku (Black Raku ware), which is covered with black glaze. The term “Raku” sometimes refers to all pottery ware made by this same process. – Quote from A Dictionary of Japanese Art Terms
3rd Sasaki Shoraku born in Kyoto in 1944. His mentor is 2nd Shoraku. He succeeded to 3rd Shoraku in 1962.
We got it from our friend. It is still in excellent condition with original paulownia box and original cloths. (Unused).
According to our friend, her family did not use the tea bowl.
We do not see any sign of using, too.
The Black Raku Tsutsu Tea Bowl was originally named “Kazaori” by Chojiro.
Raku Kichizaemon is a title passed down through generations of the Raku family, who are tea bowl makers specializing in Raku ware, one of the ten crafts of the Senke family.
Chojiro (～1589) is the founder of Raku ware (Red Raku Tea Bowls and Black Raku Tea Bowls) and the first generation of the Raku Kichizaemon family.
Chojiro created Raku Tea Bowls based on the preferences of Sen no Rikyu. He showed exceptional skill in making red bowls with black glaze, which became synonymous with the Raku family.
His original designs strongly reflect the wabi philosophy of Sen no Rikyu and are highly idealistic, drawing from Zen and Daoist philosophies. The characteristics of Chojiro’s tea bowls are their heavy and profound presence, achieved by minimizing decorative elements, dynamic shapes, and unique expressions.
It is presumed that Chojiro met Rikyu through Tanaka Sokei (1535～).
Kazaori (Kazaori Raku Chawan) is a black Raku tea bowl conceived by Chojiro. It is a small cylindrical tea bowl with a constriction in the body.
It is resembling the shape of a Kazaori Eboshi (a traditional ceremonial hat that appears bent by the wind).
The name of tea bowl comes from it.
The hat bent to the right was for the former emperor, while the one bent to the left was for ordinary people.
The tea bowl follows this tradition.
