The Chashaku Tea Scoop was named “Hibi Aratanari” by Yamagishi Kyuyu (1948–2019).
The Venerable Yamagishi Kyuyu is the Abbot of Soken-in, a sub-temple of Daitokuji in Kyoto.
Yamagishi Kyuyu (1948–2019) was born in March 1948 at Sōken-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kita Ward, Kyoto. Raised in the temple environment from an early age, he went on to graduate from Ritsumeikan University in March 1969. Soon thereafter, in April of the same year, he entered Kokei Sodo, a Zen training monastery in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, where he devoted himself to rigorous Zen practice.
After completing his training, he was granted a temporary leave from Kokei Sodo in August 1972, and in November of that year he was appointed Head Priest of Soken-in. In November 1987, he was conferred the rank of Senior Priest (Jui). From April 1989, he served two consecutive terms as Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Administrative Headquarters of the Daitoku-ji School, contributing steadily to the administration and governance of the sect.
Yamagishi Kyuyu entered Nirvana in September 2019, leaving behind a legacy of quiet dedication to Zen practice, temple life, and the Daitoku-ji community.

Soken-in is a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji, built to honor and pray for the soul of the famous warlord “Oda Nobunaga”. The temple’s name comes from Nobunaga’s Buddhist posthumous name, “Emin-in-den Taigon Soan Daikoji”.
Oda Nobunaga is widely known as a pioneer who helped pave the way toward the unification of Japan. However, his life came to an abrupt end at the age of 49 in 1582, during the “Incident at Honno-j”, which took place in Kyoto.
Nobunaga’s funeral was held at Daitoku-ji by his retainer “Toyotomi Hideyoshi”, beginning on October 11 of the same year and lasting for seven days. Following this, Soken-in was established in 1583 as Nobunaga’s family temple, built in time for the first anniversary of his death.
The founding priest of Soken-in was “Kokei Zenji”, the 117th head priest of Daitoku-ji at that time. In the northwestern part of the grounds, seven stone pagoda-style graves (gorinto) belonging to members of the Oda family can be seen lined up on a stone platform. Although many of these were moved here later, Nobunaga’s grave has been here since the temple was first built.
Today, a wooden statue of Oda Nobunaga, believed to have been created for the first anniversary of his death, is enshrined in the main hall. Soken-in remains a quiet place where visitors can reflect on the life and legacy of this influential historical figure.
The meaning of Hibi Aratanari（日々新）literally means “Daily Renewal”.
It means that each day should be lived with a renewed mindset—today better than yesterday, and tomorrow better than today—by continually cultivating oneself, making daily progress, and growing as a person.
The phrase is derived from the Confucian classic “The Great Learning” (Daxue), which states:
“Renew yourself daily; renew yourself again and again.”
“日々新 (Hibi Aratanari)” is a concise expression of this teaching.
