Raku ware is a type of pottery ware produced in Kyoto.
Raku ware refers to ceramics, mostly tea bowls, produced by the Raku family from the first generation Chojiro. Raku ware is formed by hand, and fired in temperatures from 700℃ to 1,000℃.
There are two type of Raku ware: the Aka-raku (Red Raku ware), which is covered with transparent glaze over a clay surface containing iron oxide, and Kuro-raku (Black Raku ware), which is covered with black glaze. The Black Raku Tsutsu Tea Bowl was named “Fukurokujyu” by Fukumoto Sekio.
Fujimoto Sekio (1930) born in Kyoto.
He is one of one of famous priests in Daitokuji Temple.
He studied Rinzai school and Zen under Souou Washo.
He was ordained by Souou Washoo at Yotokuin Temple in 1940.
He became a pupil of Moriyama Kankei (Seikyoken Kankei Roshi), chief priest of Daitokuji Temple and he also studied meditation in Mino Kokei Dojo in 1949.
He was appointed to the chief priest of Shoshunji Temple in 1959.
He was also appointed to the chief priest of Horinji Temple from 1983 to 2004.
He was appointed to the chef priest of Shoshunji Temple in 2004, again
3rd Sasaki Shoraku born in Kyoto in 1944. His mentor is 2nd Shoraku. He succeeded to 3rd Shoraku in 1962.
The Name of Tea Bowl is Fukurokuju. It is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, known for holding a jewel and being accompanied by a crane.
The pattern on the surface is 宝珠火焔 (Houju Kaen). It is a pattern depicting a jewel within a blazing flame, symbolizing wishes for good fortune and happiness. This pattern is used in shrines, temples, and kabuki.
We got it from our relative. It is still in excellent condition with original paulownia box and original cloths. (Unused).
According to our friend, her family did not use the tea bowl.
We do not see any sign of using it, too.
It is an expensive type of Tsutsu Tea Bowl, because of it comes with original paulownia box and original cloths.
Additionally, it is named by the very famous priest.
