Nonomura Tankan
Real name: Nonomura Yoshihiro.
Born in Kyoto City in 1951 (Showa 26).
In 1972 (Showa 47), he began creative work at Takano Chikko.
In 1976 (Showa 51), he received the artistic name “Tankan” from Takano Soryo.
He later trained under Master Hasegawa Kanshu of Sangen-in at Daitoku-ji.
In 1984 (Showa 59), he obtained certification as a First-Class Master Craftsman in bamboo artistry.
In 2021 (Reiwa 3), he was recognized as an Outstanding Traditional Craftsman by Kyoto Prefecture.
He shared a close connection with Master Hasegawa Kanshu and also crafted the preliminary shaping (“shitakezuri”) for the master’s tea scoops.

Sangen-in Temple
Sangen-in is a subtemple of Daitoku-ji, the head temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
It was founded in 1589 by Asano Yoshinaga, Ishida Mitsunari, and Mori Tadamasa, the younger brother of Mori Ranmaru, with Shun’oku Soen (Daiho Enkan Kokushi), the 111th abbot of Daitoku-ji, as its founding priest.
There are, however, differing accounts regarding the three principal patrons. “Miyako Rinsen Meisho Zue” names Asano Yoshinaga, Mori Nagasada, and Mori Tadamasa as the three benefactors.
Many cultural figures and warriors studied Zen under Priest Shun’oku Soen. Among them were Konoe Nobutada, a court noble renowned for his calligraphy, the warrior Kuroda Nagamasa; the warrior-tea masters Kobori Enshu and Furuta Oribe; the Zen monk Takuan Soho; the tea master Yabunouchi Kenchu; and the painter Hasegawa Tohaku.
Sen Sotan, the grandson of Sen no Rikyu, also trained at Sangen-in under Shun’oku Soen.

This chashaku has a well-balanced form with a clearly defined fushi (bamboo node).
It comes with its original tube, Tomobako (original signed paulownia box), and original paper box with title.

“Zuiun” refers to auspicious clouds, traditionally associated with good fortune.
